                  The Brioni islands
are a beautiful archipelago composed of two larger and twelve
smaller islets. The islands, covering an area of 7 km2, lie
along the western coast of Istria, not far from the town of
Pula. The entire Brioni island area as well as the surrounding
sea is protected. The islands abound with Mediterranean vegetation,
have a natural and a safari park, and represent a priceless
historical heritage of the Roman and Byzantine period. |

                  | The heritage
of the Roman period is especially rich: the remains of a summer
residence of the Roman emperor dating back to the 1st century
are located in the Verige bay. In the Byzantine period a small
fort was built in the Dobrika bay, which was in use until
                    the 14th century.
